The mystery is solved October 30. 2007

Remember yesterday I told you about the hopping insect in my kitchen. Joann got home before Bill and I told her about how this creature was jumping all over the place until my size 10s stopped his fun. Well, Joann said it must have been a Cricket. I thought it was a Grass Hopper but Bill said it had to be a Cricket. So OK it was a Cricket.

Today according to the Weather people was supposed to be the coldest of the season. Well, when I opened the drape this morning it was 30 degrees and it did get up to 60 degrees by late in the afternoon. I opted to stay in today.

The Health Nurse comes tomorrow so it will be Thursday before I get out and walk. While I am out on Thursday I plan to do some Christmas Shopping. Our one Department Store in town is having a big sale and I must go see what they have that I cannot do without.

Till next time -

This and That but nothing special October 29. 2007

I watched the Series last night and the ninth inning of the game was the most exciting of the whole series. I was rooting for Boston because my Son-in-law John is from Boston. Bill had to be at work at 7:30 this morning so he went to bed early. Joann could not make it past the 7th so that meant I watched the best part of the whole series (in my opinion) all alone.

When I decided it was time for me to go to bed I was turning out lights when I noticed an object on the floor in the kitchen which I thought was a piece of a leaf. Every time the door opens here two or three leaves find their way into my apartment. Well, I got my picker upper and went to pick it up to put into the garbage when it jumped to another part of the kitchen - me chasing it. What could it be - do they have Grass Hoppers up here? Well, after chasing it around the Island in the kitchen all the while remembering a story I read in the St. Petersburg Times about a woman that chased a Palmetto bug all over her house and fell over the back of her sofa and ended up with scrapes and bruises.

This insect jumped once too often because I was waiting for him with my big foot and he is jumping no more.

Can't wait until Bill gets home and I show him the remains of this creature and hope he can tell me what it was. I will let you know.

Climbed another Mountain today October 26. 2007

Not literally but we did drive up another mountain that I had never been on before. Bill finds all these beautiful drives in his work. This particular area is called "The Reserve". The leaves got more colorful the farther up we went.

As we drove up and up and up I felt like I was in a plane because my ears were crackling and closing down even though I was chewing gum.

Before turning around to head down the mountain a flock of Wild Turkeys crossed the road in front of us. Even though they did not tarry we were able to count 7, 3 of which were Gobblers.

Joann had taken several pictures of the leaves and wanted to get a picture of the Turkeys but her battery had quit on her. So sorry because on the next turn we saw several Guinea Hens. Such beautiful markings you have never seen. Oh well, maybe we can go back another day.

Back on the surface of the earth I walked the aisles while Joann and Bill shopped. Do you believe they are starting to get in the staples for Thanksgiving dinner. They also picked up a few snacks for the friends that are coming to watch the game with us.

What a difference October 24. 2007

I remember in years past when my Father and my Husband would be in front of the TV half an hour before the World Series was scheduled to start.  They did not want to miss a minute of it.   My Dad was always for the Yankees  and if they did not make it, the American League Team that did.   My Husband was always for the under dog.  I always had to have a can of Charles Chips for them to take their frustrations  out on.

What a difference here for the 2007 World Series.  I am on the computer posting to my Web site.   Joann is busy making jewelry for an order she received today.  Bill is watching a movie upstairs on his TV.   I don't take change easily so I am hoping maybe the three of us will find something about these games to peak our interest and soon.

I am sure if the Rays were playing the three of us would be fighting for the front seat.

Hope your team wins.

"The weather outside is frightful" depends on where you live October 23. 2007

You know all this talk about the weather being so hot in Florida.   I remember taking my girls "Trick or Treating" when they were that age and nearly freezing as I stood back of a bush or a building so as not to spoil their fun.

Also, having the same problem as I sat in the stands at the Football Games at Lakewood High.  Joann was a Sprite and Becky was a Cheerleader.   They both were able to spot me in the crowd - the white haired Lady shivering in her seat.

Of course that was in the early 70s.  But why the difference today.  My computer thinks it is still in St. Petersburg because every morning when I turn it on it gives me the temperature in St. Petersburg.   This morning it was 80 degrees.  Don't want to make you feel bad but it did not make it up to 60 here today.

I don't understand Global Warming but could it be that causing  the weather the way it is now compared to what it was when the girls were in school.

I never minded the heat in Florida and I don't mind the cold in North Carolina.  You might say I am well insulated.

Rain but no Rainbow October 22. 2007

If the folks around here know what they are talking about this rain will intensify the color on the leaves.   It seems the drought we are in would not let the leaves do their thing.   So that being the case I won't complain about the weather because I for one enjoy the many different colors showing on the mountain side this time of the year.

So, what do I do on a day like today?  Nothing.  I slept late, no paper to read, watched the news on TV and played Free Cell on the computer.

The day was not a complete wash out because I had a call from Daughter Rebecca and an e-mail from a Church friend who has moved to Kissimmee.   You might say this saved the day for me.

Another thing -- the Cleveland Indians let the Boston Red Sox win.  Being from Ohio I was rooting for the Indians but now I will root for Boston because they are in the American League.

Don't get the idea I am complaining.  I am really not.  How could I when I have a nice home that keeps me dry and warm when it is wet and cold outside.

Hope we can get together tomorrow.

First trip into Hendersonville October 20. 2007

We got up early (10 o'clock) and left here at 10:30 for our trip to Hendersonville.   The reason for the trip - I needed a Plum colored hat to wear with my Plum colored suit and it was not to be found here in Pisgah Forest or Brevard.
We are headed down the mountain and in front of Ron and
Arlene's house, crossing the road to get their lunch, were three Deer.  There was another one hidden by the foliage on the other side of the road.  Joann got several really good shots of all of them.   If you remember this is the house that the Bear got into and ate the cake they had on the counter.  You can almost always see a White Squirrel and the family of Deer that we saw today and the Bear (which if I never see him it will be alright with me) in front of this house because Ron puts food out for all the animals.
As if that was not enough the leaves are slowly but surely turning and the mountains are all the more beautiful with the colors so bright.
Oh yes, and that's not all. Joann found a Plum Colored Hat for me and it was on sale, is that great or what?  While she was in the store looking for the hat I was walking around the Parking Lot for my exercise for the day.  I then went in and tried the hat on and it looks like it was made for me.  Joann said "Merry Christmas".  It's an early Christmas gift.
Still another happening.  My Rebecca sent a box with gifts from Italy.  She brought me two beautiful black and white scarves. And she always brings me a calendar from the country she is visiting (mostly Italy).  She has been bringing me calendars for years and they are always so different, unique really.
What can I say about this day - an early Christmas gift from Joann and Bill, scarves and calendar from Becky's trip to Italy.  And Deer standing very close to our car.
Hope your day has been as pleasant and happy as mine.

Happy Thursday October 18. 2007

I expected this to be a sad day because yesterday our visitors returned to their homes in Florida.  I always miss everyone when they leave.

Bill and Joann had invited Karen and Bill, neighbors up the way, for dinner.  That saved the day for me.  I had met Bill but not Karen.  I had written about Bill (Will) before.  Remember the one who left his boots out on the porch and another neighbor's dog came along and took one home for his Master.  Bill was the one who left his boots out.

It was so nice to have them visit.  I found that Karen and I have a common interest.  You guessed it - Baseball.  She is a Red Sox fan.  I had to tell her being from Ohio I was rooting for the Indians.  It does not matter who wins the World Series, I feel  blessed to have met Karen and Bill.  Hope they come back soon.

Another one of those days - Special that is! October 16. 2007

A trip into town was very exciting.  Eighteen sightings of White Squirrels in and around the College.  It seems they know they are to be counted and are making sure Joann and Bill see them.

Oh yes, while we are on the subject of wild life in our part of the world here's a story that was on the evening news:  There was a young girl and her cousin driving along in a small town near here and out of no where came a Deer smashing through the windshield landing on the lap of the passenger (Cousin).  The young girl got out opened the passenger side door and the Deer ran away and the Cousin was not hurt.  Miracle I say.

Well, the question of the day was "Mom what would you do if a Deer came smashing through our windshield and landed on your lap."

Before answering I remembered on the trip up here Bill was driving his vehicle and he had their dog in with him.  Joann had Bill's cat in with us.  It seems the cat got restless and Joann said "Mom you will have to hold KC on your lap"  Well, those of you that know me really well know that I am not an animal lover but she put KC on my lap (she must weigh 18 pounds) and there she stayed for the rest of the trip.  Which means you gotta do what you gotta do.

So to answer the question - "I don't know what I would do."
If and when that ever happens you can be sure I will write and let you know how I handled the situation.

One of those Days October 15. 2007

This has been one of those Days that you would like to have every day.

Woke up feeling well which is a good beginning any day.  When Jo-An, Mary, and Joann got back from their sightseeing trip they came down and we visited.  We talked about old times and present times.  Remembering old friends and new friends.

All the health news I get on the computer says Laughing is good medicine.  Well, we four laughed until we had to break up this little group and take a nap so we could be ready for the game tonight.  Cleveland and Boston that is.  We are all for Cleveland which makes it nice.

Jo-An and Mary have called it a night and gone to bed.  Joann and I will be up for a while yet.  We have tomorrow and then on Wednesday J and M take off for Florida and home.  We will miss them.  Hope they will come back soon.

It"S A GOOD DAY --IT'S SUNDAY October 14. 2007

It's a good day because we went to Church this morning.  Haven't been there in a while.   The sermon was a little over my head - it was on the book of Timothy.  I heard the Pastor talk about Saul, Paul, and Timothy but he lost me.  The music was beautiful this morning.  We even sang the Doxology.  Don't remember having done that before.  The Choir was exceptional this morning.   And the folks attending are just the best.  All so friendly.

Another reason for this being a good day - the sun is shining and the temp is going up by the minute.  It was 40 when I opened the drape this morning but it is now about 65.  Both doors are open to the storm doors and the sun has brightened my home making my little haven even more inviting.

And still another reason for this being a good day - Jo-An and Mary will be here directly.  They are driving and are about an hour away.

Hope your day is a Happy one also.

Icing October 12. 2007

When I opened the drape this morning the Thermometer on the tree next to the Patio said it was 40 degrees. That gave me a chill and I went looking for my wool cape and scarf. I had an appointment with the Cardiologist at 10 AM. Joann picked me up at 9:30 and you know it is cold she had a jacket on. The Doctor is very nice. At least he did not ask me how I was feeling. I hate when the Dr. asks how you are feeling. My BP was normal, my pulse rate was good, oh and the good news I have lost 11 pounds, my lungs are clear. I would imagine the walking I have been doing had something to do with losing weight. And too, no more fried foods helped. Speaking of food. I baked two chicken fingers dipped in flour and melted butter. Joann boiled a potato for me. That was my dinner. Oh yes, dessert was a dish of frozen Yogurt. They tell me there is a game on tonight so I am all set to watch it. Pretty Woman is on right now. I have seen it many times but I love watching it over and over. It's the clothes she wears and the way she wears them. She is so classy. So you might say watching this movie and the game to look forward to is just the icing on the cake. It's been a good day. Thanks Joann for all the potatoes you cook for me. Thanks Rebecca for making it possible for me to write this message every day. The Wake Up Call October 11. 2007

My eyes opened at noon today after a great night's sleep to what seemed to be an electrical problem with the lights in my apartment.  There were no lights on but there was definitely light flashing.

Tracking the source of these flashes led me to the window in the Dining area.  The window is covered with a beautiful gold lined drape but the sun was so bright and the wind was so strong that it kept the leaves on the many trees in the back yard moving.  The leaves would block the sun causing the flashing.  This had to be God's way of telling me it's time to rise and shine.  Thank you Lord.

From one day to the next October 10. 2007

I will sleep good tonight.  My Daughter Rebecca is Stateside after two weeks touring Italy with side trips to Paris and Geneva, Switzerland.  She and her friend Jimmie spent a lot of time in Venice, Florence, and Milan.  They love Italy.  Rebecca is Italian on her Father's side.    Welcome back Becky.

Had a phone call from my friend Barbara yesterday.  She is busy working with the folks at Church getting ready for the big sale - I believe it is this Saturday.  Always good to talk with her.  She brings me up to date on the news from Church.  She is a special friend.

Bill's Mom Jo-An and her neighbor Mary are coming up this week end.  They hope to see the colorful leaves.   No matter which way you look there is a mountain full of trees so they should see plenty of color. This is the "Painted Forest".  Even in our back yard the leaves are changing.  Before we know it the leaves will all be gone from the trees and they will look like very tall sticks.

Time to say "goodnight".

No Blues on this Monday October 8. 2007

In town today to walk.  I walked the aisles while Joann shopped.  I had not walked for two days and I feel it tonight.

I have been here one year and I still am not blending in with the crowd.  Like today, I wore my gray flannel slacks, gray silver blouse and a black jacket that I wore in Florida during the winter.  Oh yes and I wore my Perry Ellis scarf.  It is gray and pink print.  Becky sent me the scarf quite a while ago.  I love scarves.

I wondered why everyone was looking at me - it must be my hair I am having a bad hair year.  It is then that I realized the uniform for shopping is blue jeans and a T-shirt.  Well, I am not built for blue jeans and T-shirt so they will just have to get over how I dress.

On the way home Joann pulled up at the fence to the Pig Farm and the Pigs came running over to the fence, I guess they thought we were there to feed them.  There were just three.  One little Piglet still pink and cute as can be but growing.   The Momma and I think Poppa.  Joann thinks he is the Uncle.  Guess we will never really know.

It was a clear, beautiful, warm day with a view to behold.   Each tree on the mountain side seemed to be saying "look at me aren't the leaves on my limbs just beautiful".

Today was the first day since I have been here that I have felt really warm.  We had the a/c on going into town but I asked Joann to turn it off and open the Moon Roof.  I love riding with it open.

Well, that is my day and I hope yours was just as pleasant.

Love and prayers from here to there
